Retro illustrated Spacecrafted rocket launch
Schools × Industry × Universities

Students don't just learn about space. They run a space agency.

The ambitions for space are growing faster than the workforce needed to deliver them. Spacecrafted helps build that pipeline — connecting young people with real missions, increasing responsibility and the people and opportunities of the space sector.

Why space?

Global problems need a global view.

Climate, communications, navigation, food, infrastructure, disaster response and the environment do not stop at national borders. To tackle global problems, we need to see the whole Earth. That is why space matters to everyone.

The connection

Schools. Spacecrafted. Industry.

Spacecrafted gives education and the space ecosystem a practical reason to work together.

Schools & young people

Bring curiosity, different strengths and the need for sustained, inclusive enrichment connected to the real world.

Spacecrafted

Provides the agency structure, specialist teams, progressive missions, responsibility, evidence and a pathway from following to creating.

Industry & universities

Bring authentic challenges, expertise, research, funding, feedback and onward routes into apprenticeships, study and careers.

The agency

One class. Five specialist teams. One shared mission.

Spacecrafted is not five parallel STEM activities. The teams depend on one another. Command & Control coordinates readiness and makes GO / NO-GO decisions. Launch gets the vehicle airborne. Instrumentation measures what happens. Satellite Services keeps payloads useful and recoverable. Mission Communications captures the evidence and tells the agency story.

Different interests and strengths become useful because the mission only succeeds when the agency works together.

Progression

Less scaffolding. More responsibility.

The agency starts by following a structured mission. At each level pupils demonstrate more capability, coordinate more of the work themselves and move towards authentic external briefs.

LEVEL 1 · TROPOSPHEREFOLLOW
LEVEL 2 · STRATOSPHERECONTRIBUTE
LEVEL 3 · MESOSPHEREINVESTIGATE
LEVEL 4 · THERMOSPHERECOORDINATE
LEVEL 5 · EXOSPHERECREATE

Complete missions. Prove what you can do. Earn greater independence.

Beyond one agency

First cooperate. Then compete.

Spacecrafted begins with each group learning to operate as one agency. As agencies become more independent, they can take on shared briefs, compare solutions and compete to achieve missions.

Later-stage agencies can tackle the same challenge, test different approaches and see which team of teams delivers the strongest mission outcome — bringing some of the urgency, ingenuity and teamwork of the original space race into a safeguarded education setting.

The space race changed what was possible.

Later-stage Spacecrafted agencies can take on the same brief, compare solutions and compete to achieve the strongest mission outcome.

This is already more than an idea.

The demonstrator lets schools, partners and students see how the agency operates before committing to a pilot.

Tested in the classroom

Early ideas. Real pupils. Real reactions.

Elements of Spacecrafted have been tested with Year 8 pupils, aged 12–13, in a British secondary school. These were early classroom tests of the concepts, not yet a trial of the complete five-level programme.

“What struck me was that pupils were talking about Spacecrafted during break times — it had clearly captured their interest beyond the sessions themselves. I also saw real value in the way the programme builds a record of the skills pupils have demonstrated, giving them evidence they can later draw on for future opportunities. Spacecrafted combines genuine enthusiasm with something potentially very useful for their progression.”
— Gordon Walmaley, Headteacher
“Two moments particularly stayed with me: watching pupils look to the biological world — including the shape of tuna fins — for inspiration for their rocket designs, and the laughter when they saw what the flight data did to their Test Pilot. The launch itself mattered because it belonged to everybody: all those different pieces of work had come together into one shared mission.”
— John O'Hare, STEM teacher
“I liked earning the badges because you could see what you'd done and what you could do next.”
— Year 8 pupil
“It wasn't just one big project. We did lots of different things, but they all joined together for the mission.”
— Year 8 pupil
“The launch was exciting because we'd all worked on it. It wasn't just the people who normally want to do the science stuff.”
— Year 8 pupil

The next step: a structured Founding Pilot of the complete progressive programme.

For schools, clubs, cadets & youth organisations

Structured enrichment connected to the real world.

Spacecrafted is designed for sustained, team-based enrichment rather than a one-off STEM activity. It can run in schools, STEM clubs, Scout and Guide groups, Air Cadets and other youth settings — anywhere young people can work together over time on shared missions, responsibilities and skills.

Spacecrafted can support work with these frameworks; each retains its own requirements and approval processes.

A Spacecrafted agency can run through scheduled sessions in a school enrichment programme, STEM club, Scout or cadet unit, or other youth setting. Groups can begin with a single agency and progress through the five levels at a pace that suits their young people.

Designed for safe participation

Connected to the wider space ecosystem — without open public exposure.

Each Spacecrafted agency operates in its own protected workspace. Students work within their own agency and team structure, while teachers retain oversight of progress, roles and activity. Agencies can later collaborate or compete through structured missions without exposing pupils to uncontrolled public interaction.

For industry & universities

Bring us your challenge.

Spacecrafted works with industry, universities and space clusters to turn real programmes and problems into missions young people can tackle. You bring the expertise; together we build the schools and future-workforce pathway around it.

Don't build another schools programme from scratch. Spacecrafted can provide the schools, skills, inclusion and outreach layer around authentic challenges and expertise.

Fund

Support an agency, cohort or pilot so participation can remain free to young people and host organisations.

Challenge

Bring a real problem or requirement. Spacecrafted turns it into an accessible mission across the specialist teams.

Progress

Add expertise, feedback, mentoring and onward opportunities as young people become ready for deeper engagement.

Building a consortium? Spacecrafted can be developed as a reusable youth-facing schools, future-skills, EDI, employer-engagement or outreach work package.

Founding pilot

Help test the complete journey.

Spacecrafted is moving from classroom concept testing to its first structured pilot. We are looking for a small number of organisations that want to help prove and improve the model.

Founding Schools

Start with one class or club, use the missions and resources, and help evaluate what works.

Founding Mission Partners

Fund participation, contribute an authentic challenge and add appropriate expertise and feedback.

Founding University Partners

Connect research, students and expertise with schools, industry and progression opportunities.

Spacecrafted is the first live Moonshot.

The same model could eventually connect young people and external partners around other fundamental challenges. These are future directions; Spacecrafted is the focus now.
